Samson Asaki Awingobit elected as PNC National Chairman

The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, Samson Asaki Awingobit, has officially been declared the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) after defeating Hajia Hajara in the party’s national delegates congress held across all 16 regions.

In a closely contested race, Samson Asaki Awingobit secured 893 votes, while Hajia Hajara garnered 460 votes. Out of 1,382 votes cast, 1,353 were valid, with 29 rejected.

Excited party members express high hopes that their new chairman will leverage his extensive experience as Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association to transform the party’s fortunes in the short, medium, and long term.

“I’m excited for a new era of the PNC under Asaki Awingobit’s leadership. With his stellar record as Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, I’m confident his experience will turn things around for our party,” Nuruddeen Alhassan told JoyNews.

The General Secretary race also saw tight competition, with Ishaq Awudul obtaining 690 votes, while Yakubu Faharudeen closely followed with 645.

For the National Women’s Organizer position, Esther Osei Danso emerged victorious with 876 votes. Mark Awusi Arko was elected as National Youth Organizer with 692 votes.

In a significant outcome, Bernard Mornah was elected the PNC’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections, winning his primary contest with 1,138 votes. Upon his victory, Mornah vowed to be a leader who stands with the people, promising to listen to the concerns of Ghanaians as the party gears up for the 2024 general elections.

“The bigger picture is the ultimate 7th December general elections. As a people-centred leader, I promise to work tirelessly for all Ghanaians. I will listen to your concerns, amplify your voices, and fight your fight. Our plight is the same, and our fight must necessarily be the same,” Mornah declared.

Bernard Mornah also pledged to deliver a “Ghanaian-scented” presidency, promising credible and incorruptible leadership if elected. He extended an olive branch to his rival, David Apasara, urging him to join forces to secure the presidency for the PNC.

However, David Apasara accused Bernard Mornah and the Electoral Commission of conspiring to undermine his candidacy and hinted at legal action to challenge the election results.
It remains unclear what Apasara’s next move will be within the PNC.
